Groovy Kind of Love

Groovy Kind of Love

Yesterday, my husband and I celebrated 23 years of marriage. This is apparently far above the normal marriage longevity these days, so kudos to us! When I saw my husband for the first time, my heart did a little skip. The man has the most incredible baby blue eyes and when he flashed his tiny crooked smile at me the first time, my arms prickled and my face flushed. I wasn’t the only woman at the office where we worked that was intrigued by this handsome new computer guy. He carried a black briefcase, wore blue suits, and smelled like fresh laundry. Not sure why I remember the smell, but to this day “linen” is my candle-scent of choice. It turned out that not only was he the new office hottie, he was a super nice guy. And by super nice, I mean SUPER NICE. He was what my mother would call “a catch” – if I was fishing for a man, that is. Which I was definitely not. And yet, here we are. Twenty-three years later. And I still heat up when he looks at me that certain way or when he quietly reaches for my hand while we are watching TV. As you get older, it’s those little things that have the greatest impact. I don’t know how to compare how we feel love, but I do know that it changes over time. When it’s new, there’s that giddy feeling. There’s romance and it’s kind of a show, right? Candlelit dinners. Love notes. And all those “firsts.” But love, mature love — the kind that lasts forever — shows itself in so... read more
Happy Random Acts of Kindness Day

Happy Random Acts of Kindness Day

Did you know that today, August 22, is officially “Random Acts of Kindness Day in Georgia”? Yes, indeed… it is. Governor Nathan Deal even proclaimed it so. So this morning, my friend Wendy, jumpstarted the day by performing a random act of kindness–and she didn’t even know she was actively participating in an actual event! (That’s because she’s naturally kind-hearted… soooo…”) I had mentioned to Wendy just yesterday that I was learning how to make beach glass jewelry to add to my jewelry collection. I told her about this  VERY kind shop owner on Etsy who went over-and-above by sharing not only instructions on how to make the pendants, but she also included a finished pendant and a half-finished pendant in my order so I could see one completed pendant and then I could finish the other one! How crazy is that? How often do you see people go out of their way for a mere $7 order? I can tell you my theory: The woman is passionate about what she does and is excited to share that with others. That’s it. No secret. Anyway, back to Wendy’s random act of kindness. So this morning, she brings me three jars of glass. Beautiful glass and tumbled rocks I could use for my new projects–and said “pick anything!” I have been grinning all day (and it started out as kind of a crappy day…). Thank you , Wendy. Amazing how one small act of thoughtfulness can make a person’s day. How are you going to celebrate “Random Acts of Kindess Day”? “If we all do one random act of kindness daily, we... read more
My Olympic-(like) Moment

My Olympic-(like) Moment

We dug out our Wii Fit-after last week–after a 236 day break. I know the exact number of days it’s been because there’s a woman who lives inside the machine who keeps track of all every single thing you do (and don’t do). She’s part of the reason I stopped getting on that balance board. I couldn’t stand hearing her exclaim “Ohhh!” every time I stepped on! So it was nice of her to remind me how long it had been since I promised myself I would use Wii Fit every day. Yes. I know how long it’s been. And yes, thank you for letting me know “your weight is different from the last time…would you like to continue?” Yes. I. Would. Thank you. Anyway, point being, we’re using it again — in honor of the Olympics, I suppose. Encouraged by all those perfectly-fit bodies, I knew it was time to get back on track. I had forgotten how good my husband was at every single Wii activity or game. He kicks my ass at everything from hula hooping to archery to yoga. All he has to do is play it once, and he’s a master. It’s mind-boggling. Except…in Wii Basketball, I take the Gold…every single time! I’m a rockstar! You think they’ll make it an Olympic sport one... read more

Could You Be Happier?

We have a guest blogger today! Carmen Perez, founder of Gal Pal Bounce Back Getaways and The Bounce Back Journal shared this insightful article with me and I just had to share it with all of you! Investing in yourself should be a top priority, don’t you think? If you don’t, who will? Could You Be Happier Are you dragging yourself out of bed? Feeling unmotivated and uninterested? You’re not alone. Truth is you are just part of the 61 percent of people who are stressed out and not feeling very happy these days. Managing the stress in your life can be challenging, however well worth the effort. One of the best ways to combat the signs of stress – insomnia, eating disorders, anxiety, panic attacks, and circulatory problems, is to take a vacation. Disconnect to Reconnect  With studies that show that those who took only one vacation every six years (or less) are almost eight times more likely to have a heart attack, it is time to take action and reduce stress levels, don’t you think? Even sleep studies show that within 2-3 days of starting a vacation you sleep an average of an hour longer, and your reaction time improves 80 percent! Deciding to go on vacation to reduce stress is one of the best things you can do for yourself.  Following are a few other happiness investment ideas: Invest in YOU. Only 20 percent of women are satisfied with the amount of time they spend on themselves. Just because you can do everything doesn’t mean you should. Block out time to take a long bath, go out... read more

Room for Inspiration

I love to be inspired by words. I’m a huge sucker for those “feel good” words of wisdom etched onto tacky placards and do-it-yourslf wall stickers.  You’ll find evidence of this in almost every room of my house — on walls, book shelves and desktops, and stuck to the front door of the fridge (with a fridge magnet that reminds me to “Seize the Day.”) So I’m still in the process of decorating my spare-bedroom-turned-jewelry-design-studio, and while on the hunt for some art glass to add to my growing collection I found this PERFECT wall stencil. (Love you Hobby Lobby.) I finally got around to getting the stencil up on the wall today and I’m kind of lovin’ it. It will be the first thing I see as I enter my “studio” to escape into my newly-discovered world of jewelry making! WHEE! Okay, so I know it’s just a corny quote, but it’s all about creating an experience in that room. A feeling. A place to escape the computer, the TV — the noise of my everyday life and just BE CREATIVE. What about you? What inspires you to create? Is it a particular color or a type of music playing in the background that conjures up your creative muse? I’d love to know. Tell me about it in the comments below — or better yet, snap  a picture and send it to me! Here are a few more of the “words of wisdom” I have scattered around my house. A good reminder. This one is posted above the doorway in my office. Yes. It. Is. You’re never too... read more
